Why Bother to Knock

1966       Elke Sommer

Bill Ferguson (RICHARD TODD) is in love with Stella Napier (JUNE THORBURN) and wants to marry her. He succeeds in getting her to come to his apartment but when they get there he finds he has lost his key. He suggests they spend the night together at a hotel and she flounces out, vowing she will never speak to him again.

To console himself he goes on a tour of the continent. Before he leaves his friend Maggie Shoemaker (JUDITH ANDERSON) has a number of keys made for him to insure against locking himself out in the future. In Austria Bill meets the ravishing Lucille (NICOLE MAUREY) - and gives her a key for just in case. In the Alps there's an interlude with the gorgeous long-legged guide Ingrid (ELKE SOMMER) and she gets a key, too. So does the precocious teen-ager "Harry" (DAWN BERET) in Barcelona, and so it goes, all over Europe.

He returns home and makes up with Stella. Now it develops that there's to be a

music festival in town and Bill discovers to his horror that every one of the girls to whom he has given a key will attend and use his apartment!

Everybody, of course, shows up at precisely the wrong time, and embarrassing situation piles up upon embarrassing situation. Stella refuses to understand - and leaves, for good. There's a torrid interlude with Ingrid but it turns out she doesn't want him, either.

In a mile-a-minute climax it develops that teen-ager "Harry" is in love with him - and he with her. There's a whirlwind courtship, a madcap chase, and they get married - but only via a special license. For after all, "Harry" is a minor, albeit a big and beautiful one.

Running Time: 88 Minutes
