The Lickerish Quartet
1970 Silvana Venturelli
Radley Metzger's "THE LICKERISH QUARTET" is a daring and imaginative motion picture that represents another fascinating departure for the precedent-breaking producer and director whose provocative films include the internationally acclaimed "THERESE AND ISABELLE". Known for his artful interpretation of controversial themes, Metzge now dramatically probes the power of illusion, the instability of truth and the prexistence of fantasy. Through its graphic exploration of the effect of an erotic film on the people who watch it, and the girl (Silvana Venturelli) who performs in it, the picture constructs a maze of fact and fallacy through which they must find their way before the ~ surprising climax. The girl is a creature of delectable contradictions - wildly abandoned at one moment, strangely innocent in the next, exhibiting the ultimate in sensuality with each of her partners. The man (Frank Wolff) who sees the film - and in it, other films like re-runs of forgotten desires, dreams, memories - longs to possess the girl, who will be, he believes, his most sublime conquest.
|
The man's wife (Erika Remberg), an elegant woman of charm and refinement, discovers a special excitement in the film, as she permits herself to indulge in the pleasures to which the girl artfully introduces her, And the son (Paolo Turco), hungry for experience, cherishes fantasies that the film both nourishes and destroys.
