Matriarca, La

1968       Catherine Spaak

JEAN-LOUIS TRINTIGNANT: For a young man who started his career in the theatre with the thought that it might help to overcome his natural shyness, Jean-Louis Trintignant has done all right. His latest role, in Rod fey Metzger's "THE LIBERTINE", finds him as an established star playing opposite beautiful Catherine Spaak in a role that is a far cry from timidity.

Trintignant's appearance in "A Man and a Woman", made a tremendous impression in America and around the world, and also starred him in a non-timid role opposite Anouk Aimee. The film won the grand prize at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival, and made Trintignant a full-fledged international matinee idol.

Born at Pont-Saint-Esprit, the actor spent his childhood in the Midi and came to Paris in 1950 to enroll in dramatic school. The following year he made his first appearance before the footlights in Schiller's "Marie Stuart, "followed by four years of touring the hinterlands with various stock companies.

In 1955, he made his film debut in a short subject by

Marcel I chac, "Pechinef', then in Christian Jaque's feature "Si tous Ies Gars du Monde."

Since then he has worked continually with the biggest directors and stars of the French cinema. Among his notable successes have been Vadim's "And God Created Woman" with Brigitte Bardot; Vadim's "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" with Jeanne Moreau; and "The Sleeping Car Murder" with Yves Montand and Simone Signoret.

CATHERINE SPAAK: .The enchanting European star of Radley Metzger's "THE LIBERTINE", has created an international reputation in her many motion pictures.

Leggy, moody and starkly modern, Miss Spaak has become an exciting new personality. She is a stylish dresser, has a jet-set temperament and a penetrating talent.

In "THE LIBERTINE", she plays a glamorous widow who fallsin love again while investigating her husband's unique and mysterious past.

Miss Spaak's background is formidable. Her father, Charles Spaak, author of such film classics as "The Grand Illusion" and "Carnival in Flanders", is still an active and highly respected screen writer in France. Her uncle is Paul-Henri-Spaak, several times Premier and recently Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium. He was the first president of the General Assembly of the United Nations, as well as secretary-general of NATO, and continues his political career as a member of the Belgian House of Representatives.

The Spaak home was always full of movie people, but it was not through any of them that Catherine got her film start, at age l4. Accompanying a school friend to an audition, she was noticed by the director, who cast her in "Winter", a documentary filmed in Brittany.

His only concern is that she must love him and he destroys the apartment to prove that her past doesn't concern him.

Mimi finally surrenders, but warns him that she wants to be "thoroughly" happy with her husband. .. .

Shortly thereafter, the late Jacques Becker offered her a bit role in his film, "The Hole". She did not get screen credit, but her appearance elicited considerable attention. Sophia Loren saw a TV news clip of Catherine and suggested to producer Carlo Ponti that she might be the devil-may-care girl he was seeking for "The Adolescents." She was.

Catherine, who writes songs and is an accomplished guitarist, measures 34-24-34, has streaked blonde hair and light brown eyes.
