The Hard Road

"The Hard Road" addresses itself to the current problems of today's youth. This fictional account of the life of Pamela Banner (Connie Nelson), 17, takes a candid look at the life-style of young people and the pitfalls of promiscuity, drugs and crime.
Pamela, who conies from a well-to-do family, becomes pregnant and is forced to offer her baby for adoption. She drops out of high school and after a period of adjustment gets a job as the secretary for a rock-music producer. To compensate for the loss of her baby, Pam gets swept up in the fast, hedonistic parties of rock stars, who introduce her to the use of drugs. After discovering the pill, Pam loses her head and turns more and more to drugs, especially "bennies" or amphetamines, to conceal her fatigue at work, where her efficiency has fallen off badly.
She moves in with Jeannie (Catherine Howard), who hustles money for her boy friend, Jimmie (John Alderman), who is addicted to "smack" or heroin. When Jeannie gets fed up, Pam

attempts to hustle the money for Jimmie, but fails and he is forced to hock a television in order to get his "fix". He is arrested by narcotics agents during the transaction and suffers horrible withdrawal symptoms in jail.
Meanwhile, Pam is notified by the Public Health Department that she has a communicable disease. She visits the clinic and receives treatment from concerned, sympathetic physicians.
Her final debasement and ultimate tragedy comes when she tries a dose of LSD and during the terrifying hallucinations, runs onto a Los Angeles highway, where she is struck by an oncoming car. Pamela dies enroute to the hospital.
