This is the story of Sand, a beautiful and wealthy American who lives in Paris. In spite of her beauty, she affects a slightly boyish look and has only one passion in life: painting her many girlfriends nude.
One night, dressed in leather pants, she and her band of girlfriends go to a cabaret and accidentally meet Michel, who is. introducing his sister Caroline to Paris. When Caroline inquires about Sand and her friends, Michel describes them as "the fourth sex". The next day Sand seeks out Caroline, to whom she is attracted, and invites her to one of her famous parties. Caroline accepts, promising not to tell Michel, who would certainly disapprove.
Sand's party is done in the style of a Roman Orgy. There is wild lovemaking and an exhibition of striptease. After the party, Sand begins to paint Caroline nude. During the painting session, Michel breaks in and excitedly demands that Caroline get dressed. Sand strikes Michel in the face and they both fall to the floor in a violent

fight. Michel subdues Sand - and in his arms she feels a new emotion. Michel makes passionate love to Sand and then abruptly leaves her.
Sand is completely transformed by this experience. She gives up her girlfriends and becomes completely feminine, eager to devote her life to Michel. Although impressed by the change, Michel tries to dissuade her, explaining that they belong to two different worlds.
However, through the efforts of his friend Paul, Michel and Sand are brought together and they discover their true tender feelings for each other.
