Sweater Girls
It's 1956, it's summertime -- and anything can and does happen when sprightly teenage Sharon and Judy have trouble with their steady boyfriends, Pete and Kenny. The girls lie, saying they're spending the Fourth of July holiday weekend joining an exclusive club, the Sweater Girls when actually they're stuck with the task of house sitting Judy's grandmother's place, where the rule is "no boys!" Cut loose, Pete and Kenny gather their pals Andy, George, and-- reluctantly-- Henry the "Brain". Henry's included only because he brings beer from his dad's store. Basketball leads to wrestling leads to drag-racing leads to the ruin of Kenny's beloved car as the boys get progressively more drunk. Meanwhile, the girls gather their friends, witty Bonnie and dizzy Lynne. Taking the Sweater Girls club seriously, Lynne decides to join so that Sharon and Judy can help her save her reputation from rumors spread by Phony Jim. And without the others' approval, Lynne also invites a genuine "bad girl," teen town tramp Joella, to change her wanton ways and

join the club. Over Sharon, Judy and Bonnie's comic objections, Joella converts to chastity in pursuit of true 1950's-style popularity. These four send Lynne out on an initiation prank: Lynne parks with Jim in his car and partially disrobes. In shocked delight, Jim goes off to find a spot for lovemaking under a tree, When he's outside in the dark, naked and eager, Lynne drives off and strands him! Cruising around in Pete's car, the guys now run afoul of the town cop, who happily conficates their beer. Put-upon Henry gets a fresh supply, and when they're on the road again, they spot and follow Jim's car -- straight to the girls' hideout. Beery George scouts the house and is turned away from Lynne's victory celebration. Undeterred, the puppy-lusting boys crash the girls' party, all of them entering the house by various drunken means Pete finds himself not too depressed by the break-up with Sharon to romance Sharon's best friend Judy -- who's also Pete's best friend and Kenny's steady girl. Kenny begins to be aware of Pete's betrayal; virginal Henry discovers sexy but reformed Joella; and Sharon and Bonnie try to keep the noise down to a low roar as the town cop arrives to check out a burglary report. Once again, the cop greedily confiscates the boys' beer. Andy, Kenny, and Pete retaliate with a series of pranks involving the cop's and Jim's cars. At the same time, drink-crazed George dunks both Lynne and Joella in the bathtub. Joella's feelings are hurt, and it's up to Henry to rebuild the girl's shaky self-esteem. When he finds that Joella's secretly as much a "Brain" as he is, their mutual acceptance turns to passion in an upstairs bedroom. Then Joella hears the reprimanding voice of the cop downstairs; "Good Grief, it's Daddy!" she shrieks. Seconds later, Joella and Henry are fully dressed and pretending purity for the rest of the gang. Outside, Jim arrives, towel-clad and on foot, hotly pursed by the burly homosexual it's been his misfortune to attract for a ride back to town. The enraged and frustrated cop arrests Jim and hauls the "culprit" off to jail. Keeny fights Pete over Judy's affections. Next day, when Pete finds Kenny working on his car and tries to apologize, the two tussle again. But Kenny seems jollier and wiser throughout: When he excuses himself from the scene, it's to speed off on a dale with the newest-- and cutest-- girl in town!
