Strangers
1970
Vividly explicit, Strangers explores the loss of excitement in the lives of young couples who are drifting apart because of the inexplicable destruction of sexual compatibility in their marriage bed. Unlike most couples, PAUL and ANDREA seek a solution. Andrea resorts to a wild love affair, but finds that such dishonesty can lead only to further alienation. She desperately welcomes Paul's suggestion to fantasize that they are sweethearts engaging in a clandestine affair. The charade, though it begins with humor and fun, fails dismally BECAUSE it does not reach the reality of their sexual needs and desires, no matter how energetically they offer themselves. Honestly discussing their marital frustration, Paul and Andrea agree to attend a Swingers' Party. The excitement of this encounter convinces them that here may be their salvation. The little known world of the Swingers is displayed to them as they study numerous Swinger Magazines, resulting in their decision to participate wholeheartedly. They are astounded by the numerous replies they receive from letters they write, and are

quite fascinated by the variety of unique sexual appetites of today's society. Two beautiful people, TOM and Maureen, introduce them to the joys of swinging aboard their yacht on a lovely day at sea. The excitement leads Paul and Andrea to accept another invitation from Hugh and Toby, crass nouveaux rich swingers. Hugh and Toby's coarsely frank approach, though hilarious, repels Paul and Andrea, leading them to seek guidance through joining a Swingers' Club, guaranteeing them complete sexual freedom with discretion. Hoping to become Strangers no more, they attend a party at Charlotte's House, which soon degenerates into an orgy of way-out sex - a revelation of human experience of men and women, individually and en masse. Paul and Andrea are both fascinated and repelled, especially when a group forcibly compels a young girl to submit. Charlotte's attempt to keep Paul and Andrea from leaving is interrupted by a deathly scream. The couple are visibly shaken when they discover that the group-attacked girl has attempted suicide. Returning home, Paul and Andrea, once Strangers, mutely realize that the artificial stimulation of the Swingers' World is a false remedy. The answer has been in their own hearts. In a powerful, beautifully filmed denouement, they come together, Strangers no more. Strangers sensitively treats a universal marital problem exposed in a world of Swingers . . . heightened by thoroughly professional cinema artistically presenting life's sexuality.
