Franca (ELEONORA ROSSI DRAGO) comes from a displaced persons camp to work as a harvest 'hand' on the Po Valley wheat farm owned by two unmarried brothers, Riccardo (AMEDEO NAZZARI) and Carlo (MARCELI.O MASTROIANNI).
The pretty farm worker is strongly attracted to Riccardo, but he rebuffs her advances. Eager to escape her dreary and poverty-stricken existence, Franca then succumbs to the attentions of the impetuous young Carlo with whom she elopes, despite Riccardo's efforts to break up the affair "for the good of his brother".
After they have left the farmhouse, Riccardo is consumed with desire for the girl and jealousy of his brother. He traces them to a cheap hotel in a nearby town and, finding Franca alone, confesses his love and begs her to marry him. Just as she is reciprocating his amorous advances, Carlo enters the room, greets his brother, and announces that he and Franca have been married.
Stunned by the news, and torn between his affection for his brother and his love for the girl,

Riccardo brings the couple back to the farm where Franca is installed as mistress of the house. Unable to control their passion, Riccardo and Franca meet secretly, but he is consumed with guilt feelings at his disloyalty to Carlo. In a desperate attempt to solve the dilemma, Riccardo announces that he is going to marry another girl.
As he leaves the house at dawn, Franca runs after him. Carlo follows with his gun. When he catches up with them and accuses them of betrayal, Riccardo denies his love for Franca. Frenzied and hysterical, the girl snatches the gun from her husband and shoots her lover. Realizing what she has done, France falls down grief-stricken over Riccardo's body. Carlo, motivated by mixed reactions of compassion and rage, picks up the gun and kills her, then drives off in grief-stricken blindness to his own death.
