Rose Land
1970 Peggy Browne
Rose Land ... is a philosophical comedy about people "who live like you anid me... behave like you and me. .. and dream like you and me.. . " In this color feature film, the Roselanders make their dreams come true. The hero, Adam Wainwright, a former television performer, is black balled from the networks for airing a Busby Berkeley-esque production number, "You Cannot Fuck Around With Love. "Adam sinks into a life of despair and voyeuristic fantasy. Triggered by viewing Hieronomous Bosch's XVI Century masterpiece, "The Gardenof Earthly Delights," where orgy is depicted as a means of spiritual uplift, Adam~ undergoes transformation into the marauding "Black Bandit." As the Black Bandit, Adma engages in a series of night commando raids on The Lena-Bremerhaven Institute for Behaviorial Studies where he steals pornographic film. Adam's insatiable compulsion for stealing pornographic film results in his apprehension and subsequent treatment by Pyschoanalyist Dr. Sistine Skate. Unable to fulfill himself sexually, except in his dreams, Adam becomes a frustrating problem in the Parent-Child-Adult-Self Conflict.

The therapy program explores when Dr. Skate becomes engaged in an argument over Adam's unpaid bill. Attempting to stop Dr. Skate's continual harassment, Adam unsuccessfully seeks re-employment from network producer David Derrick, also a voyeur, who turns him out, recommending a visit to a priest. In a last desperate act, Adam visits Father Finney, a problem-riddled, "With-it" modern day churchman. Father Finney appears to levitate, in rosy halo, as he lectures Adam on the morality, gnosticism and his own activities as a member of the Mayor's committee on pornographic control. He advises Adam that "The humble task brings truth and wisdom" and sends him to find employment. Adam finally secures a job operating the seedy "New Follies Burlesque House" where his voyeuristic hallucinations compel him into the performance itself. As a result, Dr. Skate commits Adam to a state-operated "community psychiatric center." At this point, Adam realizes that the outside world is more "insane" than the asylum. He has several satisfying love encounters with Dr. Skate's nurse and in a fantastic visual scene meets another inmate (who emerges from under his bed) who claims he is in reality the great visionary artist Hieronymous Bosch. Bosch enlightens Adam providing the philosophic message for a positive, anti-materialistic society of the future. Magic paintings appear on Adam's hospital walls. At the climax of Bosch's performance, Dr. Skate breaks the scene and burns the paintings and sentences Adam and the Roselanders to a final cathartic cure-a visit to the Garden of Earthly Delights. In that scene, all Roselanders bring the garden to life in a fantastic tableau, where orgy and debauchery provide a spiritual uplift around a huge, 20 foot Penis-Icon. At the height of the orgy, a sinister helicopter piloted by Dr. Skate lands, ejecting guards who spew forth and spray chemical clouds. A holocaust ensues by tidal wave, leaving only remnants of the garden and the penis-icon floating on the water. A surprise ending reveals a survivor-Adam. He climbs up on the penis-icon, wearily unzips it to reveal his gossamer dream girl on a bed of roses. He falls upon the new Eve and reaching back to stern ignites an outboard motor which propels the happy lovers out to sea toward infinity into a huge rose, hanging over a beautiful white fogged horizon.
