Having gained some reputation abroad as a filmmaker, Perti (Jorn Donner) returns home to Finland from the United States to lace trouble. He is staying with Lisa (Kirsti Wallasvaara) and Jussi (Aarre Elo), old friends of his, now married and happy parents. The morning after a drinking spree with them, Perti finds himself alone with Lisa and he seduces her after she makes him promise never to tell anybody about it.
Perti tries to find suitable subjects and people for pornographic films to be made in Finland, but discovers that many actresses are unwilling to undress. After some difficulties, Perti finds a young willing couple, but the young man insists that sexual freedom already has been achieved and wants to make only politically committed films.
During his first evening in Finland, Perti encounters Sara, a school teacher who behaves strangely and seems to dislike men. Sara's elusiveness fascinates Perti and he tries to get her interested. But she is not. After finishing shooting some pornographic sequences in the archipelago, Perti returns and

tries to contact Sara, but she has left for the countryside. Perti follows her and is treated badly. He wants to leave, but suddenly Sara's mood changes and the inevitable happens. They fall in love.
Upon returning to Helsinki Perti has some problems, including Lisa's threat to tell her husband about their morning love-making. Also, the young couple's reluctance to continue their filming and Sara's insistence upon moving in with him in Lisa's and Jussi's apartment.
Perti is sought by the police for shooting some obscene sequences in public, but he escapes to a ship returning to the United States. He is joined on the boat by Sara who is eager to convince him that love in real life is better than love in films and to give up making pornographic films. She throws his cans of film into the sea. But Perti has saved the negatives.
