Of Human Bondage
1965 Kim Novak
Mr. T. Monaghan, of Doyle's Public House in Dublin, has looked after the thirsty wants of the local clientele for many a year and has seen all types of customers come and go. Recently, however, one arrived who really staggered him. This particular customer walked into the bar and stood gazing around until Monaghan asked what he wanted. "The brass," he replied, waving his arms in the air to take in a wonderful Old World display of brassy objects, including huge curtain rails, beautiful lamp fittings and other ornamentation from another and more leisurely era. "What do you mean, the brass?" lie said, looking at his customer with suspicion. "I want to buy it," the man said. Monaglian looked at him for a moment and said, "None of your shenanigans. We don't sell brass. If you want a drink, you can have one, but you can't buy the decorations, too. Now be off with you and don't waste my time." The customer then explained that his name was Roy Rossotti and that he was

assistant art director and set dresser for Of Human Bondage MGM Seven Arts screen version of the famous novel by W. Somerset Maugham, which was filming on locations in Dublin with Kim Novak and Laurence Harvey in the starring roles. "Well, glory be," ejaculated Mr. Monaghan. "So that's the film in which that darlin' girl Kim Novak is working." "In that case," said Monaghan, "you had better talk to the owner, Mrs. Margaret Doyle." It did not take the assistant art director and Mrs. Doyle long to get down to "brass tacks," with the result that the film company was permitted to buy the brass fittings outright. "By the way," said Rossotti, as he was about to make his departure after drinking a farewell pint on the house, "you wouldn't have an old beer pump hidden away ?" Mrs. Doyle said she had just such an ancient machine, and this, too, was added to the loot. On the following day, Rossotti appeared with a group of workmen anti removed the precious brasses and beer pump to the Ardmore Studio in Dublin, where, a few days later, they added authenticity to a magnificent turn-of-the-century restaurant setting for Of Human Bondage designs by Academy Award-winner John Box. Some moments later. Laurence Harvey walked onto the set, took one look around and shouted, "This is for me! I'm building a house in California and this is just the stuff for a special Old World room 1 have in mind. I'll pay anything for it." So, when filming was completed on Of Human Bondage a large packing case made its way from the studio to the docks. In it were the fabulous brasses, destined to be the show piece of a star's home in far away Hollywood. Rossotti said it was and that Producer James Woolf and Director Ken Hughes wanted the brass to decorate a fashionable restaurant of the early 1900's. Kim Novak seems to have her pick of Hollywood's most eligible leading men. Sometimes she gets them twice, as in the case of Jack Lemnion (Phff ft" and "The Notorious Landlady"), James Stewart ("Vertigo" and "Bell, Book and Candle") and Frank Sinatra ('Pal Joey" and "The Man With the Golden Arm"). Currently, Miss Novak shares a tumultuous romance with Laurence Harvey in the MGM-Seven Arts production, Of Human Bondage based on the famous novel by W. Somerset Maugham. Others of her leading men include Fred MacMurray in "Pushover," William Holden in "Picnic," the ]ate Tyrone Power in The Eddy Duchin Story," Kirk Douglas in "Strangers When We Meet" and James Gamer in "Boys' Night Out."
