Night Games
1979 Cindy Pickett
Roger Vadim Directs Night Games "Vadim is different, free, creative, not frozen to a script," says New York actor Barry Primus, who co-stars in the celebrated French director's newest English-language film, Night Games The Avco Embassy release opened in 1979. Primus plays the publisher-husband of Vadim's newest discovery, Cindy Pickett, a fellow New York performer. She portrays his sexually frustrated young wife caught up in erotic fantasies inside her Beverly Hills mansion. "Vadim is very open-minded in terms of actors. When he sees something good developing he allows it to happen," Primus goes on. "I knew as soon as I met him I could work well with him. A few things were bothering me but we worked them out. There was a mutual kind of interest. He was more concerned with my total being than in my skills as an actor." Primus also notes the "media mystique" of Vadim. "Everyone wants to interview him," he points out. "The way he developed three women in his life - Brigitte

Bardot, Catherine Deneuve and Jane Fonda - into stardom is well-known and fascinating to the press. "In his work, like a painter, he keeps the same theme - women. And it's obvious why he's successful with women. He adores them. He is an aristocrat with a great capacity for living. And in a different sense of the word, he seems to regenerate himself in a sort of life-promiscuity." Primus, who directed second-unit photography of "The Rose" for director Mark Rydell after having appeared with Bette Midler and Alan Bates during principal photography, feels that a director has to be a jack-of-all-trades and master of some. "Vadim masters the camera," he says. "He gives it a freedom. He approaches motion pictures with the same style of consciousness he does in life. His films develop and breathe. He is an artist." An Avco-Embassy Pictures release, Roger Vadim's Night Games stars Cindy Pickett and also stars Joanna Cassidy, Barry Primus, Paul Jenkins and Gene Davis. Vadim directed the Raymond Chow Production presented by Golden Harvest. It was produced by Andre Morgan and Roger Lewis from a screenplay by Anton Diether and Clarke Reynolds, based on a story by Anton Diether and Barth Jules Sussman. John Barry composed and conducted the music and Peter Hunt was supervising film editor.
