Matter of Innocence
1967 Shashi Kapoor
Hayley Mills outgrows her child-star status and emerges as a talented, charming and sexy young woman in her latest Universal romantic story, "A Matter of Innocence." Photographed in Technicolor in Singapore. Eased on Noel Coward's short story, "Pretty Polly," "A Matter of Innocence " is the bittersweet story of a plain, frumpy girl who comes to Singapore and is transformed overnight into a beautiful woman by the love of an Eurasian gigolo. Shaski Kapoor, a leading romantic actor of his native India, is the Eurasian. Trevor Howard is Hayley's other co-star and her uncle in the picture. He plays the role of a salty rubber plantation manager, practically gone native, whose girl friend is Karen Lui. Miss Mills comes to Singapore as the traveling companion of her aunt Brenda De Branzie, Howard's sister, but does not meet her uncle until after the sudden death of her aunt -- from overeating. Miss Mills' maturity on the screen is indicated by the fact that this picture has been designated "Suggested For Mature Audiences"
|
by the Office of Code Administration of the Notion Picture Association of America. The purpose of the designation is to alert and inform parents so that they may decide for themselves whether this picture will be one which their children should or should not see, or may not understand or enjoy. As Hayley says about her portrayal, "Every actress has to grow up." The film marks the debut as movie makers of a team of successful Broadway play producers, George W. George and Frank Granat. They shot the majority of the film in Singapore, partly because its scenic beauty had never before back- grounded a feature, and partly because it is the locale of the story. Guy Green, who successfully made the jump from cameraman on such films as "In Which We Serve" and "One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing," to director of, among others, the highly acclaimed "A Patch of Blue," directed "A Matter of Innocence." The screenplay is by Willis Hall and Keith Waterhouse.
