Matinee Wives
1970 Barbara Caron
Matinee Wives. . . is a frank, revealing, and often hilarious portrayal of the frustrations and fantasies of two different young married couples. Paul Devlin and Tom Chandler are the real estate brokers who's quest for financial success has made them oblivious to the sexual frustrations of their respective and ostensibly respectable wives. Any awareness that either man may have had for the situation is clouded by each's need to constantly brag to the other of his own sexual prowess, particularly with his own wife. The wives, however, are not the least impressed with their husbands delusions. For them, any real expectation of sexual fulfillment through marriage has long been dimmed through an enterprising ex-hooker, now madam, Kay- Gavin. Linda Devlin and Pat Chandler have joined the ranks of an afternoon play for pay group consisting exclusively of prominent local housewives. While the two husbands are engaged in putting the make on every female client who enters their offices, their wives are similarly engaged in a series of indiscretions of their
|
own. The frustrations of the women exceed the desires of the men, however, in the final analysis it is the wives who really make the break from "more traditional sexual behavior". The two women, each unaware of their husbands' mutual friendship eventually get together to first satisfy the appetite, and then destroy the illusions of a "client" who had imagined that he could satisfy them both simultaneously. Unsatisfied, the two women eventually turn to each other for sexual fulfillment. Eventually, in an ironic turn of events, the husbands use the services of Kay Gavin's two top notch sex "technicians" only to unknowingly wind up with each others wife. The purpose gives way to hilarity as the two couples, occupying adjoining rooms of a motel, each find total satisfaction in the others spouse, whose performance is really no different than it is with his own mate. The final indiscretion completed, each wife believes that she has finally latched onto an interesting new sexual partner. Each husband is further assured of his sexual superiority. It could have ended right there, with each man sure of himself, not only in his own eyes, but in the eyes of his friend . . . except that they decide that since their rapport with each other is so good it's time they meet each others wives.
