Love-In '72
1972 Linda Southern
Steven Hilton has just arrived at the Community, a Canadian hideout of American hippies, runaways and draft dodgers. Being one of the latter, he is shocked at the aura of promiscuity and lack of political fervor that he finds. He is befriended by Sunny, one of the most voluptuous members of the Community, who questions him about Phil Hailer, another draft resistor who started the trip with Steve. Phil, facing imminent induction into the army is confronted with many influences. His parents who want him to buy his way out, or do anything that won't embarrass them . . . Howard Yates, a super-patriot, who thinks that everyone must fight. . . . Joan, the girl he lives with who wants him to go to Canada . . . . the radicals who want him to go underground to destroy the society . . . . and Father Reis who is a strong advocate of symbolic peaceful protest. As Steve is telling Phil's story to Sunny, he is continually interrupted by the

activities, mostly sexual, of the Community. The spirit of total liberation is especially evident during the Community's Love-In (Orgy) where not only does "anything go" but it goes on completely in the open. When Phil meets Peter Yates, a former schoolmate, who was seriously injured in the War, he realizes that he can no longer be passive. His plans to come to Canada are postponed and he joins with Father Reis in a raid on a draft office. His arrest follows, but his trip to Canada does not. By the time Steve has told the complete story to Sunny, they have become intimate, and Steve has become a full member of the Community.
