Lila
Mantis in Lace
1968
Lila SYNOPSIS Here's the fascinating plot of Lila. A pretty young girl named Lila works as a topless dancer in a go-go joint, and her favorite sport is picking up male customers and taking them to her father's warehouse for sizzling lovemaking trysts.Lila is plainly oversexed but she seeks strange kicks: moreover, she insists on having things her way in the act. The warehouse is an eerie setting for such activities, what with a single mattress on the bare floor, flickering candles, and other strange trappings. One night Lila picks up a young hippie named Tiger. They go off to the warehouse, where he turns her on to LSD for the first time. She goes off on a bad trip- seeing, among other things, Tiger's head as a bunch of bananas (obvious phallic symbolism, but also a throwback to a childhood trauma). Lila goes berserk, grabs a nearby screwdriver, and stabs Tiger in the back. Then she chops up the body and dump the remains in a nearby vacant lot. Next

she picks up a psychologist, again takes LSD, and this time sees the headshrinker as a surgeon bathed in colors, poised over her with a hypodermic needle. She again grabs the screwdriver and stabs the psychologist to death. She then hacks up his body and dumps it in the vacant lot. The police discover the blood-spattered remains of Lila's victims, and they assume that the murders are the work of a raving madman. But they have no leads or clues, and so Lila's killing continue. Her next victim is a truck driver. But rape is what is on his mind. Again gone on LSD, Lila picks up a hoe and carves up his skull - then the rest of the body. Again the remains are scattered over a vacant lot. The police by now have traced telltale bloodstains to the warehouse, and they set up a stakeout inside to trap the killer, who they still think is a man. A car drives up and Lila emerges with a customer, and the police are ready to nail him. Lila has already taken LSD. Her newest victim is carrying a gun, and when she sees it, it appears to be a giant insect (more phallic symbolism). As she grabs for the gun and the man pulls it away from her, the police open fire on the innocent guy and kill him. Lila picks up her meat cleaver and starts to hack up the man's body, and only now do the police realize they have killed the wrong person - that this lithe, beautiful young girl is a mass murderer. She is restrained by the gendarmes and taken away for her just rewards.
