Hungry Wives

1971       Directed by George Romero

Teaser Storyline for Hungry Wives

To her husband, Jack, her daughter, Nikki, 18, and her many friends, Joan Mitchell, 39, is a confident, sophisticated wife of a successful man, with all that implies.

Through a series of dream sequences we see a different Joan Mitchell. No longer needed by her grown daughter and husband (devoted to his business), she fears her approaching old age.

Afternoon bridge games are being replaced by Tarot readings, just for fun. A woman in the community, Marion Hamilton, claims to be a practicing Witch, and the ladies in Joan's circle are fascinated to have such an "in" thing right in their own backyards.

Joan and her friend, Shirley, go to Marion's home, where Shirley has her Tarot cards read. Joan observes Marion, much older than herself, and alone, able to deal positively with her life through her absolute faith in what she practices.

Driving home from Marion's, Shirley confesses to an extra-marital affair which reflected in the Tarot. The confession holds two revelations for

Joan; her friend is actually having extracurricular sex, which Joan is not puritanically repulsed by, but rather finds herself envying, and, perhaps more important, the Tarot was accurate.

Joan and Shirley come into the Mitchell house for a nightcap. Nikki is there with a boyfriend, Gregg, a blue-jeaned, long-hair. Gregg is charming, but irreverent. They all drink and talk; Gregg claims that Magic, Witchcraft, Voodoo, the occult arts, "work" if the practitioner believes they work.

Shirley gets hopelessly drunk, and Gregg tricks Shirley into thinking she is smoking grass. Shirley, puffing pathetically on an ordinary cigarette, crashes into a hysterical babbling, revealing her fear of emptiness and old age. Joan sees herself reflected in her friend, and drives Gregg from the house.

Later, Joan returns home unexpectedly. The house is quiet. Jack is out of town on business. Joan hears sounds coming from her daughter's bedroom; Nikki is moaning in the ecstasies of love making with Gregg.

Nikki realizing that her mother has returned home and heard her and Gregg storms out of the house in a rage, and runs away.

Joan, unable to communicate with her husband, seeks solace in witchcraft. Dabbling in the Black Arts, she feels the power of magic. Joan seeks out Gregg for information about Nikki. Gregg and Joan have a sexual affair, she believes she conjured the affair with her daughter's lover.

She re-visits Marion Hamilton, requesting more knowledge and confessing her explorations. She wants to become a member of Marion's Coven. Her recurring dreams now become more ominous. A grotesquely masked man, or devil, chases her, traps her, rapes her. Is the intruder real, or is he part of her dreams?

Waiting for Jack to return home from a business trip, Joan wakes from a nightmare to hear sounds at the front door. The intruder again? .

Almost hysterical, Joan grabs Jack's hunting rifle and blasts away at the silhouette in the doorway.

Jack lies dead in a pool of blood on the front lawn.

A naked Joan, debasing herself before Satan's black altar, in the paneled game-room of Marion's home, amid the aging women of the neighborhood, is initiated into Marion's Coven. Does she really believe she is a Witch as she states in the final scene?
