Housewife
1975 Jeannie Berlin
ANDREW DUGGAN, Los Angeles' most famous used-car salesman and his wife, JOYCE VAN PATTEN, are shocked to find a rat stuck in the drain of their swimming pool. A huge black man, YAPHET KOTTO, appears on the scene from nowhere and kills the rat with his bare hands. Then, without any weapon at all, he terrorizes the husband and wife-forcing his way into their large Spanish mansion and demanding money. In his search of the house, KOTTO (BONE) soon realizes that these apparently well-to-do people are broke, and deeply estranged from one another. BONE finds a savings account passbook. He instructs DUGGAN to drive into Beverly Hills and withdraw the $5,000 then hurry back in an hour or else his wife will be both raped and killed. DUGGAN goes to the bank, but at the last moment decides not to return with the money. This will be a good way to free him of an unhappy marriage-~and BONE will take the blame. DUGGAN meets JEANNIE BERLIN, an eccentric young girl. She

takes him to her apartment where she tells him of a childhood experience of being molested in a darkened movie theatre. When DUGGAN tries to calm her, she accuses him of being her attacker of long ago. She assaults DUGGAN and it is he who is "raped." Back at the house, BONE becomes infuriated at DUGGAN's failure to return. Reluctantly, he sets out to rape JOYCE VAN PATTEN. She struggles, but finally gives up in exhaustion. But BONE fails to go through with the rape. VAN PATTEN demands to know why. BONE finally confesses that changing attitudes towards black people have somehow effected his ability to perform as a rapist. VAN PATTEN begins to "mother" BONE trying to convince him that impotence is quite common in men of all colors. She finally seduces him on the living room couch. VAN PATTEN and BONE join forces to go after DUGGAN in order to kill him for his insurance. BONE and VAN PATTEN corner DUGGAN, pursue him and finally capture him. DUGGAN tries to convince BONE that the three of them can live happily together, but VAN PATTEN ignores the spiel and pursues DUGGAN to the top of a gigantic sand dune where she-not BONE-eventually kills him. BONE somehow sympathetic to DUGGAN, does not participate in the murder. He is appalled at the "white man's violence."
