House of Whipcord
1974 Barbara Markham
Ann-Marie De Verney (PENNY IRVING), works as a model. Rather naive, she is upset about her involvement in a court case, which resulted in her being nominally fined for posing in the nude. She is consoled by a stranger named Mark Dessart, and strikes up a friendship with him. When Mark invites Ann-Marie home to meet his parents, she accepts, but upon arrival is taken aback by the sinister, uniformed women who greet her. Mark disappears and with mounting terror, Ann-Marie realizes that the building is a prison and its wardress, Baths (DOROTHY GORDON), and the cruelly perverse Walker (SHEILA KEITH), expect her to don a Hessian tunic. Ann-Marie is dragged before the prison's unbalanced governess, Mrs. Wakehurst (BARBARA MARKHAM), and her blind and feeble husband, Justice Bailey (PATRICK BARR), who informs her that she is to be imprisoned for her recent misdemeanor. Ann-Marie learns from Claire, another inmate, that Mrs. Wakehurst enjoys imposing her own harsh penalties on petty criminals; that her son acts as courier; and that the prison itself

is a nightmarish den of torture, depravity and murder. When she hears that another girl is due to be hanged for infringing the regulations, Ann-Marie persuades Claire to join her in a desperate rescue attempt. Ann-Marie is thrown into solitary confinement; Claire is whipped by the sadistic Walker, and the doomed girl is executed. Ann-Marie is viciously whipped and realizing that she will be hanged the other prisoners combine to help her escape. Ann-Marie hails a lorry outside the prison walls but is now so ill and bruised that the lorry driver decides to take her to a hospital. He mistakes the prison for a private clinic. When she is sure that the driver is safely on his way again, Mrs. Wakehurst orders the death cell to be prepared. Meanwhile Julia (ANNE MICHELLE), Ann-Marie's flatmate has been making anxious inquiries after her friend. Eventually, she locates the "private clinic." The "nurses" welcome her in. Julia asks to see Ann-Marie. Mrs. Wakehurst reluctantly agrees. She opens a door and Julia peers in and finds the hanging body of Ann-Marie.
