From their first meeting, Armand Duval (Nino Castelnuovo) is completely captivated by beautiful Marguerite Gautier (Daniele Gaubert). Armand's friend, Gaston, (Roberto Bisacco) explains that Marguerite is kept by a rich old man to whom she is openly unfaithful.
Armand bribes Marguerite's friend, Prudence, (Eleonora Rossi-Drago) to arrange an invitation to a party at Marguerite's luxurious villa.
Marguerite accepts Armand's love, but on her terms, which --Armand is shocked to discover--include continuing her affair with DeVarville (Philippe Forquet),a weatthy. young nobleman from whom Marguerite accepts money. Armand insists on absolute fidelity, which Marguerite eventually promises. To celebrate their reconciliation, Marguerite and Armand go to a small coastal town where they can be happily alone.
Their idyll ends abruptly when, unknown to Armand,his father (Massimo Serato) convinces Marguerite that Armand is ruining himself for the sake of temporary pleasure. That night, Marguerite coldly tells Armand that she is returning to DeVarville. To hurt Marguerite, Armand begins a flamboyant affair with a beautiful model, Olympe (Silvana Venturel Ii).
Marguerite, who has a history

of addiction, seeks escape through increasingly heavy use of drugs.
When his father accidentally reveals having seen Marguerite, Armand realizes the truth. He rushes to Marguerite, but understanding has come too late, and he finds her in a drug-induced coma. Begging forgiveness, she dies in his arms.
