Blacksnake
Sweet Suzy
1973 Directed by Russ Meyer
Blacksnake is an historical melodrama of the early 1800's with a central theme of slavery and oppression, broadly translated with distinct contemporary parallels. The locale is "San Cristobal", a mythical island in the Caribbean. The screenplay is based loosely on legend and historical fact. Blackmoor Plantation is one of the last, profitably functioning sugar plantations in the British colonial system. LADY SUSAN, Blackmoor's amoral mistress and a female bluebeard, controls her island anarchy with an iron hand. She is aided and abetted in her cruel repression and exploitation of her black minions by CAPT. RAYMOND DALADIER, the militaristic leader of her own "ton-ton macoute", a horse-mounted platoon of French speaking black mercenaries. He is also a "bull-faggot". JOXER, the brutal white overseer, and Lady Susan's occasional stud, is another member of the circle of vicious sub-alterns with which she surrounds herself. SIR CHARLES WALKER, a young English blue-blood, enlists the aid of a high government official in Great Britain to assist his clandestine investigation into the circumstances surrounding the

disappearance of his brother, JONATHAN, the most recent husband of Lady Susan. Disguised as RONALD SOP WITH, a low born bookkeeper, he infiltrates the realm of Lady Susan's island bastion. There, he encounters the pacifist ISIAH, the spiritual leader of the island slaves, and his militant son, JOSHUA - in the mold of Martin Luther King and Huey Newton, respectively. lsiah, an advocate of passive resistance is contested by Joshua, who demands immediate, forceful action to end Lady Susan's cruel oppression. Ronald is caught up in this cauldron and, unwittingly, becomes the pawn of all the warring factions, and the catalyst of revolt. A tender relationship develops between Ronald and Cleone, a ravishingly beautiful black slave girl. Ronald eventually finds his brother, emasculated giant of a man referred Jonathan as a "dup-pie" (zombi) by the superstitious slaves. Lady Susan, Joxer and Raymond meet their justified deaths at the hands of the revolting slaves led by lsiah, following a cruel death by crucification of Joshua. Blacksnake! A film of violence born and nurtured by terror and climaxed with destructive retribution! Blacksnake! A film of parody/satire of our time! Blacksnake! Cast with British actors, and filmed in spectacular PANAVISION and full color entirely in the country of Barbados, a tropical island.
