Belle De Jour
Belle De Jour - Beauty of the Day
1968 Catherine Deneuve
Teaser Storyline for : Belle De Jour Pierre and Severine Serizy (Jean Sorel and Catherine Deneuve), recently married, are a happy couple. Their closest friends, however, frivolous Renee Favet (Macha Meril) and Henri Husson (Michel Piccoli), an observant and aging playboy, envy their happiness. Pierre is a surgeon whose job is demanding; Severine is left alone at home for long, empty days which inspire her to cruel and erotic daydreams. One day Severine learns from Renee that one of their friends works regularly in a brothel, for extra money, and although she appears to receive the news with indifference, she is actually overwhelmed. The truth is that Severine has never found physical fulfillment with her husband. Sensing her new-found interest, and anxious about it, Severine vainly attempts a closer more satisfying relationship with Pierre. Finally, Severine finds herself compelled to learn more about the brothel and she obtains the information from Henri. Before long, she is knocking at its doors. Mme. Anais (Genevieve Page) welcomes her. Severine, overcome, turns and flees. It is

only a short time, however, before Severine finds herself compulsively returning to the brothel. From that day on, Severine becomes enveloped in a double life; on the one hand a serene home-life at night with the love of Pierre who suspects nothing, and on the other, the life of the brothel during the day where she soon becomes known as the "pearl" - a term, which in the jargon of the girls, designates one who acts completely free of any inhibition. The calmness of Severine's arrangement, however, is soon disturbed by two men: Hyppolite, a Syrian (Francisco Rabal) and youthful, hot-tempered Marcel (Pierre Clementi) - both of whom she's come to know at the brothel. In the tragic events that follow, Severine, without success, attempts to flee Marcel's persistent attempts to completely dominate her. Marcel, convinced she will not abandon her husband for him, shoots Pierre and is in turn killed by the police. Pierre, now paralyzed, learns the truth about his wife. Vet, despite all of this, somehow we are led to believe that there is hope for the future. RUNNING TIME: Approx. 100 Min.
