"The Empire Strikes Back," the continuation of George Lucas's epic adventure saga which began with "Star Wars," opened in 1980. Returning in their heroic roles are Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa. In his quest for the Force, Luke has become an increasingly brave and skilled warrior. Still the handsome, daredevil pilot of the Millennium Falcon, Han Solo has become involved with the Rebellion, lending his courageous support when it is most needed. And the lovely Princess Leia has become a dedicated leader of the Rebel effort. Anthony Daniels returns as See-Threepio (C-3P0), the human-shaped protocol droid whose complaining and talkative nature occasionally make him an annoying companion. David Prowse reprises his villainous role as the towering, black-clad giant, Darth Vader, the right-hand man of the evil Galactic Emperor. The loyal, but easily enraged Chewbacca, an eight-foot-tall Wookiee, is again played by Peter Mayhew. Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2), the barrel-shaped droid who beeps, whistles and toots, is once more interpreted by Kenny Baker. An entirely new character has been created by George Lucas for "The Empire Strikes Back." He is Lando Calrissian, the charismatic boss of a mining colony in space, portrayed by Billy Dee Williams, who starred in "Lady Sings the Blues." "The Empire Strikes Back" was directed by Irvin Kershner from the screenplay by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, based on the story by George Lucas. Gary Kurtz was producer and George Lucas was executive producer. Music is by John Williams. The space epic is a Lucasfilm Ltd. Production and a 20th Century-Fox Release, rated PG.
