Food of the Gods
1976 Marjoe Gartner
American International's updated version of the H. G. Wells' classic tale of terror, "The Food of the Gods," takes place in 1975 on a lonely island off the coast of Canada. Morgan and his friends Davis and Brian have been enjoying a day of deer hunting on the island until Morgan hears Davis' agonizing screams. By the time Morgan reaches him Davis is barely recognizable, his hideously distorted face is just a mass of swollen flesh. The others have arrived too late to have seen the swarm of giant wasps that have attacked him. Morgan seeks help from a nearby farm but soon finds himself battling for his life against a giant six foot tall rooster. Only his instant reflexes save him from the rooster and the other giant fowl. After locating Mrs. Skinner barricaded in her house, she tells him about her husband's discovery of the strange and powerful substance that increases growth enormously that has begun oozing out of the ground. Skinner feels his fortune is made with the

substance he's named the Food of the Gods When Morgan sees the overturned cans labeled "FOTG" in the pest-ridden storeroom he suddenly realizes others besides the chickens have been sampling the food. At that moment Skinner is in town having just convinced Bensington, owner of a dog food company, and his resident biologist Lorna Scott, to make a visit to the farm the next day. When they arrive at the farm they find Mrs. Skinner absolutely terrified. Her husband never arrived home and she's spent the night alone, surrounded by horrible giant creatures of all kinds. Morgan and Brian have also returned to the farm determined to destroy the mysterious Food of the Gods but find an obstinate foe in Bensington who sees only the money he could make from its sale. No one noticed the half-eaten remains of Skinner's body that was left a short way from the road. Suddenly the group spot a young couple scrambling down the road toward the farm. They also see hundreds of giant panther-sized rats that seem to be stalking the pair. It's almost as if the rat army is herding the people into one group. Watching the almost intelligent deliberation of the rat horde, Morgan soon realizes the desperate situation of the people gathered at the farm. The last line of their escape from the island is now completely cut off, and they're facing an ever increasing horde of voracious rats that are reacting as if some intelligence were organizing their plan of attack. Sending the rest of the group into the farmhouse, Morgan sets out to find a way to out-maneuver this "rat commander" before he even stands a chance of defeating the insatiable rat army. . . and destroying the deadly substance misnamed "the Food of the Gods."
