Flash Gordon
1980 Sam J Jones, Max von Sydow
Teaser Storyline for Flash Gordon On the planet Mongo, Ming the Merciless (MAX VON SYDOW) is playing a little game. He is causing earthquakes, hurricanes and hailstorms on Earth. He is also blocking out the sun. Down on Earth, Dr. Hans Zarkov (TOPOL) is understandably distraught. Having had his theories dismissed as irrational, he now sees them all coming true. The moon is out of orbit this has been caused by some energy force directed at it. It is only a matter of time before the moon comes crashing into the Earth. Zarkov wants to counter-attack in his spaceship, but he just can't get volunteers. But he does get some unsuspecting help. Flash Gordon (SAM J. JONES) , quarterback for the N.Y. Jets, and Dale Arden (MELODY ANDERSON), a travel agent, have been forced to crash-land their prop jet because of the turbulent conditions. Winding up in the scientist's laboratory, Zarkov kidnaps the pair, and they take off for Mongo. Not unobserved, however. As soon as the ship lands,

the three travelers are immediately captured by Ming's men. The planet is a police state, but Zarkov feels this may work to their advantage. Everyone will be waiting for one man to lead them in revolt. He hopes. Flash, Dale and Zarkov are taken to Ming's hall where leaders of the various moons of Mongo are paying reluctant tribute to the Emperor. Prince Barin of Arboria (TIMOTHY DALTON) and Vultan (BRIAN BLESSED), leader of the Hawkmen, have their own feud with one another as well. Mirig eyes the beautiful Dale and tells Elytus (PETER WYNGARDE), head of the secret police, to prepare her for his pleasure. Ming's erotic and lascivious daughter, Princess Aura (ORNELLA MUTI) eyes Flash. As Dale is led to Ming, Flash leaps out to save her. With the surreptitious help of those supposedly loyal to the Emperor, Flash fights off the police--running through them as if in a football game. Finally, though, he is defeated. Ming orders Flash to be executed. Aura pleads that he be spared--she doesn't care if this offends Prince Berm to whom she is engaged. Or Klytus, who is in love with her. Or the Imperial Surgeon (STANLEY LEBOR) with whom she is having an affair. But the word is final. Flash is to die. By gas. As his final request, Flash asks to see Dale. Their meeting is made all the sadder because they are falling in love. At an elaborate ceremony, Flash is given an injection by the Imperial Surgeon and, then, executed. Or is he? Later in the crypt, Aura enters with the love-struck surgeon. As a dangerous favor to the Princess, the surgeon reinjects Flash to revive him. Flash has actually been alive the entire time! A new plan of attack forms ...
