Fantastic Planet
Plante sauvage, La
1973
The inhabitants of the planet YGAM are androids 39 feet tall with red eyes and blue skin, called DRAAGS. They have reached the highest levels of scientific knowledge. Their lives are devoted mainly to meditation and leisure activities. They harbor tiny pets, the OMS, which they treat kindly as long as they remain docile and subservient. Several couples of OMS were brought from a distant planet that was destroyed. They have some degree of intelligence and when tame, are affectionate with their masters; their life cycle is faster and shorter than that of the DRAAGS. It all begins when TIWA, the high minister's daughter, adopts a baby OM which she calls TERR.
At first little TERR submits to his young mistress's whims. But he soon takes advantage of the education which is being directly infused into TI WA's brain through electronic earphones. At the age of fifteen, TERR is tired of his confined life of luxury as a household pet; fearing his masters may discover his knowledge and prevent him from continuing to

instruct himself, he runs away with the precious earphones. He goes to join the hordes of rebellious OMS that live like savages. After many mishaps with the bizarre flora and fauna of YGAM, he becomes a member of one of the bands that are hiding in an abandoned park and shares in their adventurous life. But the DRAAGS are worried about the increasing numbers of wild OMS and decide to de-OM the park by the use of anti-personnel pellets. Many are slaughtered. The survivors manage to kill a DRAAG and get to an area where abandoned rockets are stored. Gradually, thousands of rebellious OMS come to join them. They build a huge underground city where they busily study DRAAG technology and undertake to repair the abandoned spacecraft. It takes them many long years which, for the DRAAGS, are only a few weeks. All over Planet YGAM, a major De-Om-isation has begun. Just as the warning of the DRAAG ships sounds in the city of the OMS, one group under TERR's leadership succeeds in taking off in two rockets and getting to the Fantastic Planet. There they discover the great secret of the DRAAG meditation, necessary for their survival, and spread confusion in their sacred rites. Since the DRAAGS are threatened in the most vital aspect of their lives and are at last convinced that the OMS are intelligent, they begin showing them respect and wish to collaborate with them. The OMS are freed from persecution and the DRAAG society is instilled with a rich vitality. A new satellite is created in the skies of YGAM, a sister to the Fantastic Planet. On it, the OMS start a new civilization in the fertile Uvas of their homeland, which they name TERRA.
