The House That Screamed
1970
A semi-correctional school for teenage girls in the south of France is run by Mme. Fourneau (LILLI PALMER), an upright, authorative widow. Therese (CRISTINA GALBO), a new student comes to the school and is indoctrinated into the life which, in addition to its daily study courses, includes non-curricular activities such as taking turns in the barn with the local delivery man; paying homage to a hierarchy among the girls headed by Irenee (MARY MAUDE) and suffering her kangaroo courts and being spied on by Mme. Fourneau's peeping Tom of a 15-year-old son, Louis (JOHN MOULDER BROWN). The activities of the son are known to a great extent by Mme. Fourneau. He is constantly forming attachments among the girls and each time she scolds him, calling the girls trash and begging him to wait for one who merits his attentions . . . a woman like herself. The most recent problem of the school, however, is the repeated disappearance of girls, who are assumed to have run away from the forbidding house. Three

girls had already disappeared when Therese arrived and a fourth, a young lady who had been consorting with Louis was gone shortly after her arrival. But she has not escaped. Lured to the green house, she is stabbed there and her body disappears. Determined to stop the flurry of escapes, Mme. Fourneau has the windows of the school's first floor nailed shut and changes the keys, giving one set to the head pupil, Irenee. This complicates the plans of Therese who also wishes to escape. One night, she packs her belongings, sneaks to Louis' room and tells of her plan. When she tries to pry up one of the salon windows, a figure sneaks up behind her and slices her throat. The departure of Therese is noticed by Irenee who rushes outside using her key to leave by the front door. However, when Therese doesn't appear, she re-enters the house and, at a window, she finds evidence of a washed blood spot and realizes the danger that exists within the house, suspecting Mme. Fourneau. She, therefore, makes her plans to escape. When Mme. Fourneau calls her to the salon after the girls have been sent to their dormitory, Irenee instead tries to find an escape from the house. She is followed by Mme. Fourneau on a trek through the house to the attic. There, Mme. Fourneau finds her dead . . . with a hand missing. She also finds her son there and he leads her to a table on which a rotting corpse lays in a shroud, made up of the parts of different bodies. He states he has at last found a hand for his creation, which is a girl modeled after his mother, just as she always wished it.
