Frankenstein 6: The Monster from Hell

1974       Peter Cushing

With the making of "FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL" Hammer Film Productions return to the traditional Gothic horror for which it has long been renowned. Peter Cushing first created the Hammer "Frankenstein" in "The Curse of Frankenstein" in 1956. It was a box-office success; Cushing became internationally famous. Now he returns to play Baron Frankenstein for the sixth time. Director Terence Fisher's unerring touch and long experience (he directed the first "Frankenstein" and numerous other Hammer horrors) have earned him the title, "Master of the Macabre". Producer Roy Skeggs sets out to retain the essential conception of escapism as in the past, knowing that audiences today can accept far more visually horrifying scenes. He instances the brain transplant which will be seen and not merely referred to; eyes being placed into empty sockets and hands being stitched onto arms. The Monster, Frankenstein's latest creation, is a terrifying "thing" even to sophisticates of today.

The screenplay is by John Elder. Elder has updated his horror while retaining the essential traditional "close your eyes

if you're scared" approach. The story is set in the Criminal Lunatic Asylum where it is believed Frankenstein died after prolonged imprisonment. However, a young devotee of the Baron, Dr. Simon Helder is now similarly committed to the same asylum and finds his idol very much alive. He is allowed to assist Frankenstein with his experiments, ably assisted by a mute inmate, the young, beautiful and highly intelligent Sarah, known and loved by the other inmates. And he uses those inmates to carry on his infamous experiments. Shane Briant plays Dr. Helder and beautiful actress Madeline Smith, who has established her career in numerous films as well as on television, plays the mute nurse. "FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL" is set mainly within the confines of the Asylum. Art Director Scott MacGregor's set designs produce an unnerving atmosphere of stifling claustrophobia and Frankenstein's laboratory has even more blood-curdling and ingenious mechanical apparatus. The Monster, a gigantic seven foot tall, fills the screen. His huge, hairy body and Neolithic-shaped head are the joint effort of Special Effects expert, Les Bowie, and expert horror movie Make-Up artist, Eddie Knight. "FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL" is a Joseph E. Levine presentation for Avco Embassy Release.

The monster is portrayed by David Prowse, who went on to play Darth Vader in Star Wars. Click here for more
