Frankenstein 5: Must Be Destroyed
1969 Peter Cushing
Frankenstein is currently transplanting brains in Warner Bros. Seven Arts' latest terror feature, "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed," which opened in 1969. The latest of the highly popular series stars Peter Cushing, making his fifth appearance as Frankenstein, Virginia Carlson, Simon Ward, Freddie Jones, Thorley Walters and Maxine Audley. Most of the filmmakers involved with past Frankenstein features were on hand for the present chiller, including director Terence Fisher and producer Anthony Nelson Keys.
The same team which has had phenomenal popular world-wide success for its handling of films of the macabre was responsible for "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed": director Terence Fisher, producer Anthony Nelson Keys, cinema photographer Arthur Grant, and art director Bernard Robinson. Written for the screen by Bert Batt and edited by Gordon Hales, the shocker was filmed in England. Peter Cushing, currently playing the indestructible Dr. Frankenstein who insanely carries on with his brain transference surgery, first played Baron Frankenstein in "The Curse of Frankenstein" (1956). At that time, he escaped certain death when a disciple took his place on

the scaffold. He has since been beaten by a mob, recreated by a loyal assistant, and entombed. In his present role, Frankenstein appears to be doomed. Certainly there can be no escape as he is carried unconscious into a blazing house by one of his crazy patients. Veronica Carison, who falls victim to Frankenstein's evil deeds, is the only actress ever to star with both kings of horror films, Peter Gushing and Christopher Lee. She starred with Lee in the enormously popular "Dracula Has Risen From the Grave." Maxine Audley, starring as the tragic widow whose husband is a victim of Frankenstein's madness, is constantly busy fulfilling stage, screen and TV appearances. She has recently appeared in "Deadfall," "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush" and "Sinful Davy." Handsome Simon Ward makes his first screen appearance as the young doctor blackmailed into helping Frankenstein with his fiendish medical experiments. Another victim brought down by Frankenstein is Doctor Richter, played by famed character actor Freddie Jones, who has enjoyed considerable TV successes with "Nana" and a chronicle of the Caesars. Thorley Walters, playing Inspectoç Frisch whose assignment is to capture the elusive Baron Frankenstein, has appeared for over thirty years in musical comedies, Shakes. pearean comedies and tragedies and former Frankenstein films. Fisher's direction of Hammer Film's classic "Curse of Frankenstein" established him, Peter Gushing and Christopher Lee as masters of the macabre over a decade ago. Click here for more
