Dunwich Horror
1970 Sandra Dee
Dr. Henry Armitage (ED BEGLEY) is a guest lecturer at Miskatonic University on subjects dealing with the occult, particularly the rituals described in an ancient book, The Necronomicon, which is kept in the Rare Book Room of the campus library. Two coeds, Nancy Walker (SANDRA DEE) and her friend, Elizabeth Hamilton (DONNA BACCALA) are in the process of locking the book back in its case when they are interrupted by a young man, Wilbur Whateley (DEAN STOCKWELL). He talks the girls into letting him read the book at a library table, although use of the book by the public is forbidden. Dr. Armitage discovers the young man memorizing passages from the ritual. Before taking the book from him, he learns that Wilbur is from Dunwich, a nearby village which has a legendary history of weird, evil happenings, and is a great-grandson of Oliver Whateley, who was hanged by the villagers as a demon. That evening Nancy, who finds herself strangely attached to Wilbur, offers to drive him back to Dunwich. Her

feelings are even more sympathetic after she learns that the townspeople of Dunwich believe Wilbur, his aged grandfather, Old Whateley (SAM JAFFE) and Wilbur's mother Lavinia (JOANNA MOORE JORDAN), now in a mental hospital, belong to some race of monsters from another world. After arriving at the rickety, forbidding Whateley farmhouse, Wilbur brews Nancy a concoction of tea which leaves her in a hypnotic state. She agrees to spend the night at the house, sleeping in the huge four-poster which belong to Wilbur's mother. During her sleep she has a strange dream in which men with goat-heads try to induce her into a sexual orgy. Back at the college, an alarmed Dr. Armitage and Elizabeth leave for Dunwich to find out why Nancy hasn't returned. In the village they talk to Dr. Cory (LLOYD BOCHNER) and his nurse, Cora (TALIA COPPOLA), about mentally ill Lavinia and the rumors about the birth of Wilbur. There is no record of a father, but village gossip believes he was the Devil. While Dr. Armitage is conducting his investigation, Wilbur takes Nancy to the top of Sentinel Hill, an eerie promontory near the Whateley house, and shows her the circular altar and stone columns at the top which are known as The Devil's Hop-Yard. He tells her, suggestively, that the Old Ones, people who once inhabited the earth, used this ceremonial place for fertility rites. He tells her that according to the. Necronomicon they can, through the proper incantation, be brought back to earth. Elizabeth, ignoring all warnings, come to the Whateley house alone, confronts Old Whateley and demands to see Nancy. Both she and Old Whateley are destroyed by an invisible source that manifests itself through a surging wind and the chatter of whipporwills. The force spreads death and destruction through the countryside as Dr. Armitage tries to rally the towns people into an assault on the mountain where Wilbur is readying Nancy for the sexual rites. Dr. Armitage and Wilbur confront each other with incantations from the Necronomicon . a battle to the death between Good and Evil.
