Dracula 6: A.D. 1972
1972 Christopher Lee
Christopher Lee, who has just completed playing his famous role of Count Dracula in Hammer's updated horror movie "Dracula A.D. 1972" for Warner release, researches his character with a documentary-style thoroughness. "Dracula did exist," he maintains, "He was Vlad the Impaler, a Rumanian Prince who was generally known as Dracula amongst his people. It became a name that the Prince finally adopted himself." Before starting filming on his sixth screen portrayal of Dracula, Christopher Lee visited Rumania where he acquired first-hand knowledge of the character, and new insights into the role. He went there to film a Swedish-American television documentary about the Dracula legend which he is now convinced was the basis of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story. "I'm not suggesting that he was a vampire," he says, "but he did exist." In the 15th century, he was chieftan of Wallachia, now known as Muntania, one of the three regions of present-day Rumania. "What Stoker did was to take the real character of Prince Dracula and tie it in

with all the local superstitions about vampire bats," says Lee. Even today Rumanian peasant believe in vampire bats which prey on human blood." "Dracula A.D. 1972" also stars Peter Cushing, Stephanie Beacham, Christopher Neame and Michael Coles.
