Burnt Offerings
1976 Karen Black
A contemporary Gothic tale, Burnt Offerings a film by Dan Curtis, stars Karen Black and Oliver Reed and co-stars Burgess Meredith, Eileen Heckart, Lee Montgomery, Dub Taylor and Bette Davis. It is the chilling story of a family confronted with a nameless terror during their summer vacation in an isolated country mansion. A P.E.A. Film, Inc. Presentation, Burnt Offerings was produced and directed by Dan Curtis from a screenplay by William F. Nolan and Curtis based on the novel by Robert Marasco. The picture is released by United Artists, a Transamerica Company. Virtually the entire film was shot on location at the Dunsmuir House, an impressive Victorian mansion located in a huge garden-park in Oakland, California. Karen Black undoubtedly merits the accolade bestowed upon her last year by People magazine when it called her "probably the most employed actress in Hollywood." Burnt Offerings is her 18th film role in eight years. Oliver Reed is a veteran of more than 40 film roles in the past 15 years and

is considered one of Britain's top male film stars. Burnt Offerings marks his debut in films made in America. It was as Mio in "Winterset" that Burgess Meredith's artistry on the boards soared to fame and has since become one of America's foremost acting talents. Of course, nothing need be said about Bette Davis' position as First Lady of the screen and in Burnt Offerings she adds still another fine characterization to her brilliant career. In the course of her more than 30-year career (32 plays, 12 films and 20 TV shows), Miss Eileen Heckart also has received the New York Drama Critics Award and a New York award by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Emmy), plus a half-dozen other prestigious accolades, as well as an Oscar for her performance in "Butterflies are Free." Of Burnt Offerings Producer / Director Dan Curtis says, in part, "It has a violent ending, but it is not a violent story. There is an insidious building of pressure. Halfway into the picture, I believe the audience will be holding its breath."
